Need help finding extract and grain specifications

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:44 pm

Doc, Jon, or Jamil - maybe you guys can help me. I am hoping someone can give me some websites or a location where I can find out SG (my program actually asks for the Yield Potential) and color of extracts, both DME and LME of various suppliers. When I am trying to formulate a recipe with my beer program, in order for me to comply with style guidelines, I need fairly accurate SG and SRM color of the extracts so I can try to meet the guidelines. Also, in grains it asks for the Dry Yield, Fine Grain percentage - what would that be for extracts?

All my program has (Beersmith) are the generic extracts listed. I would like to put in the actual specs from the products I order from my LHBS, but they don't know what that information is either as it is not marked on the containers they get.

You can get a lot of extra info on beersmiths web page. They have some extra plugins for the database. If what you are wanting isn't there you will have to get the info from the supplier. Even once you have the info on a specific grain it will vary somewhat from lot to lot. I know I have chased down a couple of different grains. If there is something specific you need let me know and I'll see if I can find it.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Thanks Travis. I have checked the Beersmith website but may have to look closer as I could not find any new downloads. Maybe I am being a little anal in this but when formulating a recipe, I would like to have the correct information concerning grains and extracts. I was reading some of Noonan's book last night and he mentioned most LME's are about 1.036 SG and DME's are about 1.044, regardless of manufacturer or supplier. If that is pretty much the universal numbers and there are only minor insignificant changes from year to year, lot to lot, then maybe I am worrying about nothing. Maybe somebody can answer that question for me?
