First Try at Partial-Mash, what do you think of my recipe?

Sun Jan 07, 2007 9:41 am

I started off trying to do a SNPA clone, but do to lack of ingredients at my LHBS and my own faulty memory (got the wrong hops) I now can't say it's a clone any more.

Here's what my recipe looks like now.

Mash:
3lb 2-row Pale Ale
2lb Crystal 60l (the SNPA called for 1.7lb but I figure why not just throw the whole 2lb in)

6lb Mutton's Extra-Light DME (late extract)

Hops:
.5oz Nugget 13.5 60min
.5oz Perl 7.0 30min
1oz Challenger 7.5 10min
2oz Challenger 8.0 0min

Yeast:
Safeale US-04 (they didn't have the US-56 I was looking for)

O.G.:
Should be about 1.053.

I.B.U.:
Should be about 53-54

This is my first Partial Mash recipe so I'm not sure what to expect regarding the gravity of the mashed wort. So, I'll check the gravity once the mash is done and adjust the amount of extract to balance it out to the desired O.G.

What do you think.

Well I did the mash. I got about 2.25gal of wort from the partial mash and it has a S.G. of 1.065

If I'm following Ray Daniels 'Designing Great Beers' correctly that means I have 2.25 x 65GU = 146.25GU in the wort

So to reach my target grav of 1.053:

53GU x 5.5gal = 291.5GU in the whole batch

291.5GU - 146.25GU = 145.25GU needed from extract

145.25GU / 40GU (per lb extract) = ~3.6lb extract

Looks correct to me. That's a great book, huh?

Careful though! After a few months of partial mashing, you'll realize how easy all-grain can be and you'll be ready to move up...

I just got the book. I really like it.

I ended up coming out a couple of points short of my target O.G.

I ended up at 1.051 instead of 1.053.

every thing seemed to go well. I took me from about 12:30am to about 7pm from start to finish. The boil started at 3:05 and I was cleaned up by 7pm, so about 2.5hrs on the partial-mash (including the 60min rest).

I get into more detail on my brewblog

Oops,

Yea, 12:30pm. 19hrs would have been a long brew day.

I was surprised at getting so many gravity points out of the mash. What do most mashers do to predict the S.G. of the mash?

Cool, I just D/L'd the evaluation copy of ProMash.

According to it, I hit my target gravity right on the nose 1.051.

It gave me a gravity of 1.065 for the mashed wort (2gal) and that's right on the nose as well.

That will be a great help in the future. This time I bought 2lb more extract than I needed. I thought I was going to need 6lb.
