Planning a JBA Extract batch

Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:58 am

Hello all

I am planning on brewing Tasty's Janet's Brown Ale from Brewing Classic Styles soon and I have a question from the forum.

The recipe calls for 1.25 lb of Carapils.

I plan on using Briess Golden Light LME...which contains an unspecified amount of Carapils (according to their site).

Should I compensate for this fact by cutting back on the steeped Carapils?

If so, by what amount?

Thanks!

Pure guess... maybe cut it to a half pound.

That's always been the difficulty of subbing extract in a recipe... you never know quite what the composition of the extract is. Of course following an all grain recipe has its own little hurdles. Say a recipe says use a certain quantity of Crystal X. The product of the same Lovibond from different maltsters can also vary quite a bit in flavor.

Thanks. That is exactly what my instinct was too.
