A Cream Ale is characterized by low bittering (15-20 IBUs), and low-moderate hop flavor. Depending on the hops that came with the kit, you can get citrusy flavors and aroma from a late American C-Hop addition (ie Cascade, Centennial, Columbus). While a prevalent citrusy hop flavor is high for the style in a strict BJCP sense, I think it would probably still taste pretty good once it's all carbonated (ie, Deschutes Twilight Ale comes to mind -- lots of sweet corn and malt with a massive blast of cascade hop flavor and aroma balancing against a moderate bitterness backbone -- yes, this is higher than you describe the bitterness for the kit). Give it a chance. The carbonation will add a crispness and that will sharpen up the overall flavor and increasing the perception of bitterness overall.
