Wet hopped beer

Tue Jun 17, 2008 7:11 pm

So I just harvested quite a bit of hops off my 2nd year cascade.
I've got plenty more that I will be picking over the next month or 2.
I'd love to do a wet hopped beer but all my hops won't be ready at the same time.

I seem to remember from one of the Vinnie shows that he said you could freeze hops w/o drying them, I might be wrong but I think I heard that.
Does anybody remember?

If it is possible, I was going to vacuum pack what I have, freeze it, and hopefully harvest enough within this month to brew some fresh hop beer.
What do you guys think?
Thanks,

I can't remember if Vinnie ever mentioned it on the show, but The Homebrewers Companion by Charlie P says this on page 67:

"Interesting results were found by German hop researchers when they tested the stability of frozen undried hops. The found that the undried hops, when frozen, were significantly more stable than dried hops stored under identical conditions."

Thanks berrocracy, if Charlie said it than I'm sold.
I froze everything I picked and found a recipe from someone you all may know http://sonomabeerocrats.org/art/hoptime.pdf
Anybody know any specifics on this recipe? mash temps and such?

I'm only growing Cascade but I'm hopeing someone in my club has some Chinook, or something similar.
If not I'll wing it.

Colin Kaminshy did a show on Wet Hopped beer last October, I think. Look it up. He talked about how to wet hop a beer. Also, check out Vinnie part 2 episode. He talked about drying and freezing hops like you're talking about doing. Hope this helps!

Cheers!
