Janet's Brown strikes again

Brewed up a slightly tweaked version of Janet's Brown back in July (tweaked due to the hops on hand, etc etc).
Entered it in the KROC World Brewers Forum "American Ales" competition and was delightfully surprised to get a Gold (the flight was American Brown, Robust Porter, & American Barleywines).
.... And due to brewing time constraints, I made the extract version (from Brewing Classic Styles, of course).

Congrats! I fucking LOVE that beer.
Brewed it first for the 2nd BN Community brew, and then again a few months ago b/c I loved it so much.
I just killed the last keg 30 mins ago unfortunately, but I have some entered in the Dixie Cup Comp so we'll see in a few weeks.

Thanks for letting me know about your success. That beer is really about the malt so hop adjustments are definitely in keeping with the spirit of the beer. I must have had twenty people tell me at GABF that they had brewed the beer. Many had placed in a competition. Somehow the American Brown category got railroaded by Moose Drool fans so it's always nice to see a real American Brown Ale get some attention.

That was a tasty beer. But I'm kind of confused about the style. I see it was listed in the NHC as a brown but the tasting sheet at GABF had it listed as a black IPA. Are those styles that similar?

And it was nice to chat with you last night at GABF tasty. I was wearing the Boundary Bay shirt

I AM calling two different beers by the same name. That's a pretty bad thing to do but I gave myself a pass in this case. The recipe that's in Jamil's book and in this months BREW magazine is the 1.065 Janet's Brown Ale. The recipe that's in Zymurgy and the beer that was at the ProAm is the 1.074 imperial version of Janet's Brown Ale. I've been thinking about making a 1.056 version. Let's see what should I call that one..........YES, Janet's Brown Ale, of course.

The ProAm beer was called a Black IPA because we thought that was the closest GABF style that matched our beer.

Don't hate on the Moose Drool clone, Tasty! It's an excellent beer. It's just a little tame on the hops to be considered a good American Brown. I've taken gold medals with the JBA from the 2nd Community Brew as an India Brown Ale, and silver with the same beer as an American Brown Ale. The CYBI Moose Drool got me a gold as well, but as a NE Brown. Both are excellent beers! Thanks again for sharing all yur great recipes.

Picked up a silver with this beer in our national comp over here in NZ. They said 'Too hoppy for style' - I'm not complaining

And the other 4 of my medal winners were Jamil's recipes or slight tweaks there-of.
