Hahaha I thought that was the case. I admit, the first time I saw that number I had the same thought! But GOD can you imagine what a 1.7 OG brew would be like? I don't think it's possible. If you wanted to get that down to 1.040 FG, that would be 86.5% ABV. I don't think that the yeast would like that environment so much....

I had a barleywine wort at 1.310 once. It didn't even look like a boiling liquid any more, more like lava or taffy. I think I read somewhere that maple syrup is 1.350. We diluted it down to 1.117 for fermenting, though.
What's on tap: Cream Ale, Imperial Blonde

You Americans are WAY to paranoid about fermenting in plastic - most Australian homebrewers only ferment in plastic. And I know of at least one who has a lovely 100L version of just that type of industrial conical set-up inside a fridge. He is a medal winner at the nationals.

Not one of my beers has ever seen a glass or steel fermentor, and I doubt they ever will.

Ok if you are lagering in secondary for months - get some glass or whack it in a corny keg, but jeeze, for the week or so needed for a standard secondary?? If O2 is your worry - just don't do a secondary, you'll pick up more O2 in the transfer than will make it through the walls of a HDPE fermentor. Then you can save on glass and the pita of the transfer.

And with the exchange rate with the US$ in the toilet it must be more like $500.00 Aussie. Bet that makes you feel even better.

wrong way around katzke - its the USD thats in the toilet, the AUD is at 20year highs. Close enough to parity with the USD that even with shipping, it would probably be cheaper for me to buy one of those damn things in the states and ship it out here, than it would be to buy the local product.

For $250 - not worth it. For $70 - more than half the brewers I know would have those things
