Whirlpool Immersion Chiller

Thu Feb 22, 2007 10:14 am

The 1 hour ride to and from work is a blast with the BN!

All that aside, I've been doing a lot of thinking about Jamil's Whirlpool Immersion chiller.
Ok, so I don't have a fancy setup... yet... and really don't want to set up a pump. I know the "open the pot and stir" method is just asking for trouble, but has anyone worked out something to get a whirlpool in the kettle without a pump?

I'm thinking of one of those drill-powered paint stirrers. I'm sure you'd want to keep it on low so it just give a slow motion, but wouldn't something like this work?

I don't have a pump either. I whirlpool by stirring with my wort chiller. You would be amazed at how quickly that drops your temperature. A drill powered stirrer would whip too much air into the wort before it got cool. You would have awful oxidation problems.

I've tried that, but my chiller is pretty big wrt my kettle, and I can't get much of a stirring motion out of it.
About the areation, I was thinking of a variable speed drill, with a low gear. More of a gentle stirring action.

Plus, I'm a bit of a science geek/gadget head, so I may have to try to get something rigged up anyway... in the name of science...

So are you saying you stir the wort with the immersion chiller? I can't imagine there would be much whirlpooling going on at that point...

I think he means that he wiggles it just a little bit....
or he uses it as a spoon to stir the work thereby bettering his cooling efficiency.

My brew kettle is wide enough and my wort chiller narrow enough that I can get a good stir going in there. My old turkey cooker pot didn't have enough room to do much.
