I've always used Bar Keepers Friend (BKF). Supposedly one of the chemicals in it works to repassivate the stainless as well as clean it.

Barkeepers Friend (BKF) is all you need. It is primarily oxalic acid which removes crud and passivates the stainless steel.

I bought a converted keg with two welded ports, but they were not passivated (is that a word).

I had brewed in it once before listening to the show archive from a couple of weeks ago and before I realized I should scrub it with BKF. I cleaned it and scrubbed it with BKF and a green scrubby. The stainless looks good (no more halo) except for a thin line of rust around each port.

Am I eff'd?
