I entered my first homebrew competition today under "The Brewing Network." It wasn't an official BJCP competition. It was a "people's choice" competition in which brewers entered a five gallon keg or bottle equivalent at the Lee's Summit, MO Oktoberfest. There were about 100 people that paid $15 to sample about 50 homebrews in the biergarten. I had a lot of good feedback but in a popularity contest its hard to tell whether people liked the beer or were just trying to be nice or were just happy to be drinking beer. I brewed an Oktoberfest recipe based on one from an old Can You Brew It episode (*Edit* Jamil Show episode from 2006) in which Doc stepped in for Jamil. I used Wyeast 2112 California Lager yeast even though most of the information online said it was too fruity of a profile to use on an Oktoberfest. In fact, the only favorable post for this yeast was from Klickitat Jim on the AHA forum and that was enough to persuade me to use the Cal lager strain. The beer had no fruitiness that I could detect and I had many repeat customers. There are prizes for the top three beers which will be announced Monday. I'd like to insert a goofy photo here on the forum but I'm not sure how to do it.
