Aloha All,

I purchased a Nissan LEAF in 2011 ago as an alternate to the F-250, which is paid in full and still useful at times.

We added some additional panels to the roof in 2012 to offset the additional power for the car, so still only paying about $100 per month average over the year. We will go to $0 if I lose the car.

Unless you have a second car or only need a 50-70 mile round trip per day, I don't think solo electric car is the the way to go - at least not yet.

I'm thinking about ditching the electric car and the big truck and going to something like a Tacoma. When you add two car registrations (that has doubled in cost over the past two years) and two insurance paymennts (you do not pay by the driver here, but by the vehicle) electric just might not be quite mature yet since you need a backup vehicle for long trips.

It has been different, I rarely use the truck and only go to the gas station every two or three months, but I think the range of electric vehicles has to at least double and the cost of the betteries has to come down before this becomes mainstream.

sounds like you need to trade in the leaf and the F-250 and probably some more money for a Tesla :)

Oahu has a shit ton of electric charging stations in town. An electric car here would be pretty badass. Maui, on the other hand, is a desolate rock in the middle of the ocean. They do make good beer though, hopefully the new Honolulu brewery is decent this time.
