I grew up in the NE and went to public school. Now Phila. public schools are pretty shitty in many respects but I did have a pretty diverse set of friends and that helped me in so many ways.

Abington, bunch of panzies .. JK :) Willow Grove has some rough patches, and Roslyn isn't exactly Shangri-La.
