New brewer in Utah

Mon May 14, 2012 7:34 pm

Just brewed my first extract batch with help from a friend who is an experienced brewer. He also pointed me to this forum. I've lurked a bit and searched quite a lot so I figured I'd introduce myself.

I might be moving out to Utah, should find out next week. I was doing extract on the stovetop for about two years then allgrain for a little over a year now. What is the homebrew scene like in Utah? Are there many shops around to get supplies? I was going to try the Hop Notch when I saw a guy walk out of the store with what turned out to be the last 6-pack...have to wait until next time.

Where would you be moving from?

It's like anything else in Utah that doesn't fit with the Mormon cultural norm, there aren't that many, but those that are around tend to be dedicated and help each other out.

There are two shops near downtown Salt Lake City (Beer Nut and Art's) and a third that is further south in the suburbs (Salt City Brew Supply). I frequent Salt City just because it's closest to my house. All three have a good selection and knowledgeable staff.

Hop Notch is good. Whether you move here or not, it's worth trying. For as small as the beer drinking community is in Utah, there are a surprising number of quality breweries.

Well Im here in Utah now... Wow was it really that long ago when I wrote that... Time flies! Moved from CO and in Clearfield now. Joined up with Hill Hoparazzi the brewclub from Hill AFB. Just passed the BJCP entrance exam today :pop Looks like I will travel to Richland WA for the Tasting Exam in Aug. Oh and I've gotten to enjoy plenty of the Hop Notch, damn fine brew. Some really nice breweries in Utah, can't wait to get to check some out up close. How's your brewing coming along?

Spider - thanks for that link
