Airlock freeze

Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:50 am

So I had my Black Lager running in the frig and last night I took a peek I had ice in the airlock. Between the cold outside, the frig sits in a mudroom that is open to the outside and the setting of the frig (which is used and new to me) so I raised the temp to the warmest setting last night. This morning still has ice.

Last night we got down to 23 or so I am thinking about leaving the power off and maybe leaving the door open a crack for a few hours at night and close it in the morning.

I guess my question is, has this happened to anyone else? What were the ill effects?

I had that happen to me as well the first time I lagered.

Switch to vodka, etc in the airlock in place of water.

yum...vodka...

Thanks, first time I lagered I didn't have the frig so I had the carboy in the mudroom elevated from the concrete floor and enclosed in a cardboard box to stabilze temp and potential light damage.
