Oxygen Stone times

Wed Oct 04, 2006 9:31 pm

Just bought an oxygen stone- I've read the recommended usage time is 30 seconds, off for 30, on for 30..

When I crank the tank on no bubbles come out of the stone for a couple minutes. Do I wait till I see bubbles to start timing? I assume the stone is getting -loaded- on oxygen and at critical mass actually starts putting the oxygen into the wort and visible bubbles are seen?

I will aerate for 90 seconds non-stop on all my beers...even the big barleywines. Be sure that you are only opening the valve enough to see the small bubbles frothing up in the wort. You are wasting oxygen otherwise. I never go back and hit it with more oxygen after I put the lid on the fermenter. No need to in my opinion and I've above average attenuation on all my brews.
