counter pressure transfer set up

Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:19 am

OK racked into corny kegs last night and I'm done with auto siphons and just siphons in general ..
has anyone seen or made a pressure transfer rack,, basically I'm going to build a 2 hole carboy stopper with adjustable copper tube up/ down to use co2 pressure to push out the beer out of the carboy and into the keg/secondary..
questions how much pressure can a glass carboy take???
any one have some pics
I cant believe it hasn't been done before,, more ideas??
somewhere I saw a Counter pressure bottle fill that used a sports ball needle pushed threw a stopper

Thanks

Carboys scare me overall, doubly so when using pressure on them, but people have done exactly what you propose. I don't do it, so I have no pictures, sorry.

I do use the basketball needle filler you mentioned. It's called the Poor Man's Counterpressure Filler and was first designed by Ken Schwartz. He kindly drew up this diagram:

and here is the one I use to bottle pretty much everything, even though I own a regular CPBF and once owned a beer gun:

What's on tap: Cream Ale, Imperial Blonde
Secondary: British Amber,
Primary: APA

Chris Graham put out a article on closed brewing.

He uses a carboy cap with a racking tube instead of the stopper. I would also recommend using a better bottle instead of a glass carboy.

I've been thinking about doing the same think except with a bucket fermented instead of a glass carboy. I think I will just make a second hole in the lid and put a 1/4" male fitting rigged up to a #2 stopper on it since that's what my keg quick disconnects use. That's my next project after I finish my twin keg washer.
