Iso Extract - Hops extract anybody?

Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:35 am

Troops,

After listening to the interview with Vinnie last weekend and doing some digging I've decided to get a new product in; Iso Extract

This is a hop extract, not the exact same as what Vinnie uses. It isn't what other breweries use as well when they use clear bottles and want to prevent skunkiness. IT IS is produced from CO2 extract and contains only purified isomerized α-acids.

There are formulas for calculating the amount to use on a homebrew level, and it basically adds pure, clean BU's without flavor. This is to be added post fermentation, post filtration (if you do that).

Iso Extract will be in a 1oz brown glass bottle with a dropper built into the lid, like fermcap-s is oftentimes in. There is a formula to it's usage I found online that I condensed a bit:

About 1.38 ml for adding 10 BU's to 10 gallons finished beer, with about 20 drops per ml thats approx 28 drops, which makes one bottle about enough to add 10 BUs to about 21 batches of 10 gallons of beer.

Iso Extract is essentially the same product as IsoHop.

The listed price will be about $29 for the 1oz bottle

ETA: I expect this to be available to order within 2 weeks, the Nikobrew family will be out of town (celebrating little Niko's 1 year bday already!) that weekend (feb 3-6th we'll be gone) so it would ship upon our return.
If anybody here has used isohop and would like to give some feedback it would be appreciated, as well as any questions. Thanks!

Re: Iso Extract - Hops extract anybody? - formula

I = (B x V x 0.0117) / 30
where I = amount of Iso Extract in liters
B = bitterness units required
V = volume of beer in us barrels

---

So for 10 gallons (.3225 barrels) of beer adding 10 BU's:

10 x .3225 x .0117 / 30
.0125 liters = 1.25ml
Efficiency is about 90%, so 1.25/.9=1.388ml

1oz = 29.57 ml

It's not a linear equation so we can't just assume that twice the dosage is twice the bu's, this is just an example. I always think you should add more hops anyway, but I also think this will be a fun product to play with.

$30 for ISO Extract is A LOT to pay when you consider that Northern Brewer's HopShot sells for literally 1/10th that at $3 per 10 IBUs. The price of ISO Extract is just way too high to do what I can only imagine it's for -- fixing a brew that has less hops than you'd like. The entire 5ml of hopshot at $3 will add 50 IBUs to your 5 gallon beer.

I don't imagine they are getting much more flavor in the ISO Extract but if someone has tasted both and genuinely feels the ISO Extract is worth the extra $27, please respond.

Thanks for the info on NB's product, I was comparing with isohop which is the same product I'm talking about and I've seen listed around $35.

I also think the math I did was a bit confusing, 1oz of iso extract would 10 bu's to 21 10 gallon batches of beer...I just plugged in 50 BUs for 5 gallons and it came to 3.49ml, 1oz is about 8.5 of that volume.

From something I just read about hopshot its not already isomerized so it has to be boiled where iso extract is added post ferment with no boil needed. Not that it's a huge deal, these are just some differences.

Oh, and the potential list price of $29, which is about $6 less than I've found it elsewhere would be the pre BNARMY coupon price. Price with coupon would be $26.97

Thanks for the post I hope someone who has used both products can comment.

That could make for the fastest batch of homebrew ever, save for a pure dump & stir kit.

Chill 2/3 of your water to 40F
Boil 1/3 of your water (steeping grain on the way if you wish)
Remove from heat, add extract, return to boil
Boil 10 min
Put hot wort + cold water in fermenter
Add yeast
Post fermentation add Iso Extract

That's, what, 30 minutes total time invested to make a batch? Awesome! Can't do that with the HopShot because the hopshot needs to be boiled. Seems a perfectly reasonable way to make a weizen or any of the scottish family. Maybe even a lambic? I guess that last one would take a *very* small dose.

Niko,
It might be a good idea to carry something like the NB Hopshot if you can get it. I believe it is a Hop Union product. The ISO hop extract is used for post-fermentation, but if people are looking to clone Pliny they are going to want the Hopshot type stuff that you add to the boil. I've thought about buying some of that ISO hop extract recently, but it seems like a lot of bread to throw down on fixing a single batch of beer, and as far as I know it needs to be used within a certain time of opening.

Do you know anything about the shelf life of the ISO hop extract once it is opened?
