cleaning an abused boil kettle

Thu Sep 29, 2005 1:14 pm

i let my buddy borrow my converted keg so he could do his first full 5 gal boil, on the condition that he cleans it and takes care of it. just got to his house to find it rusting and a nice layer of solidified PBW on the bottom. i plan on scrubbing it with a stainless scrub pad, and his carboy is going to get a nice surprise before i leave. any suggestions on fixing this keg/kettle?

TSP Trisodium phosphate, or TSP substitute work well too. All paint stores and home improvements stores carry it.

Dude, not cool.

If you scrub it, make sure to passivate it again to prevent further rust. Palmer has some stuff on brewing metallurgy at:

with the specifics on passivating stainless steel here:
