Clone of RR IPA & Blind Pig

Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:05 am

I just came back from a trip out west and stopped by Russian River. I have to say my favorites were the Russian River IPA and Blind Pig IPA's. Does anyone have a clone recipe for these?.... JZ, Tasty and Nathan...how about a CYBI show on these?

This is the B3 all grain kit recipe. Not sure how close it is. I am sure you can get the OG and IBU infor from the RR website.

Vinnie's Blind Pig IPA

13lbs 2-row
0.5lbs malted wheat
0.5lbs carapils
0.5lbs crystal 40L

2 oz. Chinook hops for 60min
0.5 oz. cascade hops for 30min
1 oz. cascade hops for 15min

Secondary fermentation additions *

0.5 oz. cascade hops
1.0 oz. centennial hops
1.0 oz. American oak

Yeast- WLP001

* Secondary additions are to be added directly to the fermenter after 7days without racking. Rack after 7days on the hops and oak chips.

If I remember correctly, Vinnie gave the basics of a recipe for the Russian River IPA (not Blind Pig) in one of his appearances on The Sunday Show. I think it may have been the "Belgian Beers with Vinnie Cilurzo" show, toward the end.

He gives percentages for the grain bill and the hops he uses. Hopefully that helps. I think he also said that the Blind Pig clone B3 sells is an older version of the recipe. It sounded like the B3 version is not quite the same as the recent version.

Great! I will dig up the achieve and have a listen. If there is a recipe, I will put it into ProMash and post it.

Well if the Morebeer forum would ever come back to life I would link you to the email exchange I had with Vinnie about Blind Pig. I made some changes to the B3 clone kit based on Vinnies advice and posted the recipe. You should know (according to Vinnie) the B3 one doesnt taste much like Blind Pig as it is served at RR.

i would probably kill the oak and dry hop with 2-3oz columbus and then an ounce each of centennial and simcoe or amarillo. ive found the mouth feel and aroma from the dry hopping to be most key with RR hoppy beers. this will definitely get you in that dank/piney realm. dropping as much yeast from suspension before you dry hop is also pretty important.

I just listened to the August 14-05 Sunday show that has Vinny talking about his Belgians and his IPA's.

The IPA discussion starts at about 1:52:0.
Here is the recipe Vinny rattles off for Russian River IPA

Malts:
2 Row - 92%
Crystal 40 - 2-3%
Carapils - 5%

Hops:
90 Min: Mix of Warrior and Columbus
45 Min: Centennial
30 Min: Cascade
0 Min: Centennial, Cascade, Columbus
Dry hop (6 days after fermentation): Columbus, Centennial, Cascade

Mash at 152F

Ferment 68F

OG 1.064
FG 1.011
6.5 ABV
