As a compromise, I may just 'buy' a keg of Bud or High Life and have a party. I have no problems "stealing" a keg from them. That's what they get for making shitty beer with all that sweet equipment.

This is the easiest/cheapest way to go too... because many times they'll just give them too ya (breweries), or charge you 20$ for shits.... and this way, you aren't screwing anyone in the business out of kegs.

It's kind of a hot button issue for home brewers... just so ya know. :jnj

Good luck w/ your sanke fermentor... I may try and rock that too, now that i'm going to 10 gallon batches.

I have plans to use a Sanke, or several, as fermenters myself. I have a bunch of carboys as well, and once my new ferment chambers are built and up and running I should have the capacity to have 4 Sanke's or 6 6.5G carboys rocking at a time, plus a bunch of cornies chilled, or lagering.

I am also building a new MT out of a Sanke. Just an FYI you can use a 2" Tri-clover on the top port. This will be the drain for my new mash tun. :jnj
If you really want to go the hot shot route you could build something like this, or buy it from Stpats.

One of the guys in my club is welding 4" tri-clover fittings onto Sanke's for his fermenters.

Baller. I wish I knew a guy who could weld stainless for me.

Good tips though, I'll keep all that in mind when I go to bump batch size. 5g is just not cutting it at all.

It is very disturbing that the ethical aspects of this this needs to be explained.

+1
Yet it is more amazing how convincing the rationalizations are....

"Anheuser Busch should share their equipment with us free of charge, because why? Oh because I don't like Bud light. Or no, wait.. is it because we're communist and I co-own their tools? No? It's on the tip of my tounge...."

that said, mine is stolen too.. given to me by the person who found it in the woods. Try returning one without a receipt and see how badly the retailers want to deal with you.

If I do need more, I will buy legally. Our local brewery sells them for $30 all the time.

To those with the helpful info, I thank you.

To the rest of you, take the #13 stopper out of your ass.

If you think I'm a thief for using one of a huge company's "tools" for a long time under only a deposit, so be it.

I hate getting christmas cards anyway.

P.S.

I just drank a Samuel Smith's and noticed that I apparently left a 5 cent deposit on the bottle it came in. I promise to send it back to England ASAP. It may cost more than a nickel, but at least I will be able to sleep at night.

You are welcome.

Your sarcasm is duly noted. I'm not judging. I am simply saying that your rationalizations serve only you. Man up and say you posess an illicit keg. I do!

Back on topic, I love your idea, and the suggestions that have been offered. I hate glass because it's fragile. A sanke seems like an elegant, inexpensive solution. I want to work towards one of my own. Hell, I might even buy it legally this time.
