Raisins as yeast nutrient

Wed May 27, 2009 4:43 pm

I started my yeast off by rehydrating with goferm, and had bubbles in the airlock within a few days. It's starting to slow down now, and with the lack of adding any other nutrients, I feel I need to throw the yeast something to make sure they finish the job. I'm going for as dry as possible, so something needs to be done.

I've read here and there that raisins are a good yeast nutrient. Do I need to worry about any flavors being added to my mead? I don't want a raisin flavored mead, so if that's how it usually works out, I'll just go get some nutrient.

What is your recipe and process thus far?

Have you taken a SG reading?

It might be too late for additional nutrients depending on how far along the fermentation has gone.

Next time yes raisins can be used as a substitute and if used at 1lb/5 gallons you really can't tell they were there.
