What do you use to get samples from carboys

glass wine thief. Had the plastic one for quite a while but I like the glass one better.

I have the Fermtech thief also and it is great. Your hydrometer fits inside the thief and the one way valve at the bottom lets you pull a full sample with a couple of strokes. It's really long so you can pull samples from partially full fermenters. In my experience, the Fermtech auto siphon is a piece of total shit-ass, unless you enjoy constantly losing your siphon and pulling lots of air into the beer your racking.

Use a hose clamp. Fixed my problems with this.

I've been using similar turkey basters to get my samples for years. A trick you might want to keep in mind is that when the baster won't reach (e.g. 5 gallons in a 6.5 gallon carboy) you can stick a piece of tubing on the end and suck it up just fine.

Yeah, I was pulling air through the dash rod plunger seal pumpy thingy, not the discharge output/couple to transfer hose area. Seems like everyone that tries the auto siphon either loves it or hates it.
