Re: Is a 5L flask too big for a 2L starter?

Are you guys doing stirplates on these 5l starters? I got one on the deal as well and the thing dwarfs my stir plate and I imagine that spinning the stir bar might be an issue. I figure that just agitating this every once in awhile would be just as good with so much surface area.

I have a 4L flask and I love it. Using it with some foam control is a great way to manage 2-3L boils on starters. You can never have too much headroom (or head for that matter). I did, however, opt for the longer 2" stir bar.

go on ebay to get a stirplate. i got an older model corning 10 x 10 inch for $25. those things are built to last, workhorses. it stirs my 5L into a vortex in seconds with the 2in. stirbar. we have a stirplate in my lab that has been stirring 24/7 for over two years, invest the bucks and it should last a long time. and you can use the heater to boil the starter instead of placing the flask on an electric burner which was my old method that I hated doing.

Nah, I just need to up the speed and create a better base on my computer fan and magnet stirplate that I created for nothing.

Mine definitely dwarfs the stirplate I built for my 1L flask. I just added a wider piece of plastic to the top, and it steadies it enough that it works fine. I've ordered a larger stir bar, but my 1.5" creates a vortex pretty quick in the 2L starter I made.

Doesn't matter how big the flask is compared to the stirplate, as long as it sits on there. The stir bar being 2 inches and creating the vortex is what matters, no?
