Is a 5L flask too big for a 2L starter?

Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:44 pm

I have 1L flask and a brand new 5L flask, thanks to the recent MoreBeer deal!

I need a 2L starter for Saturday.

Is there some kind of surface area issue that I haven't heard about? or something else?

I hope there's no problem, I've been using a 5 liter flask for 1.5-2 liter starters for the past year and a half and my beers have all fermented just fine. Don't taste too bad either.

I didn't think so, but there always seems to be some obscure piece of arcanum that I'm not familiar with.

See, this is good to know. I knew I hung out here for some reason. :unicornrainbow:

How much was the deal of the day for the 5L flask from morebeer?

I think it was around $18. It was one of those multiple Deals of the day.

I was driving to Hilton Head, SC and had my laptop open in the passenger seat in case something was a really good deal.

It could have been a real pain if not for Push Eject's emails.

Doesn't seem like there is a problem. I pulled the trigger on the same DOTD and I used the 5L to make a 2L starter this past weekend. I had less than a 5 hour lag. Kind of interesting that you will get all kinds of condensation on the inside of the flask from the heat that the yeast are generating though.

Nope. In fact, I'd say more surface area would arguably be better, if anything, as that would promote more gas exchange. I regularly do 2L starters in a 4L container.
