I would mention specifically that topping off with tap water as (incorrectly) suggested by many sources will produce chlorophenolics. This is one of the most common flaws I run into when judging. A 1/4 of an aspirin-sized campden tablet will remove all the chlorine/chloramine from tap water and is highly effective at eliminating this flavor/aroma. A pack of them is usually $2.50 give or take at the homebrew store and is well worth the investment.
