SF Beer Week

Wed Jan 13, 2010 6:13 pm

nothing can prepare you for a week long event in your own city that is the likes of San Francisco Beer Week. it's starts with a party in the shape of a beer festival and ends exactly the same way 9 days later. that's right, it's so big that the week has to have one more day then that Beatles song. every night and sometimes day there's are multiple events that you will surely miss because you chose to attend what seemed like the more awesome. beer dinners, rare tastings, a night of sour beers, the Barley Wine Festival, the Double IPA festival. on top of that it's the second week of Magnolia and 21st Amendments Strong Beer Month. and it's my birthday.

kids, there are more than 50 events. there is no possible way to make it everywhere. I know, I tried.

okay, three things will prepare you. here's a plan. taking the entire week off of work is essential. making a list of what you want to attend like the 'tion fest, lagunitus, more Vinney, a tea party and so on. make the list so you won't miss something. finally park yourself in the City so you do not have to drive.

Was going to try to make the Gala... and the DIPA Bistro fest...was going to try to get to RR for The Younger release on Friday but they'll have it at the Bistro so we'll see... that coupled with the 1/30 BNA WinterFest is going to be a heck of a week. Looking forward to it.

Very excited about Beer Week!

Not sure on the Opening Gala... any thoughs?

I'm definitely making:
Pliny Release Day
Double IPA Fest
Beer Judging lecture
Sour Fest
Chez Pannis, maybe a few times
Treasure Island beer dinner (TBD?)
Tea Party

Iffy on Barley Wine... I've done that many times, and not sure I want to endure the mob scene.

Cant wait! :D

I want to say it that the Opening Gala is a must attend event but with so much to do the rest of the week you could skip this using your money for another day. here's the thing with this. you simply cannot attend everything. and with that in mindset you don't have to feel bad that you are missing something. it's okay because everyone will miss something. last year there were beer dinners that were held the same night and there was no way to attend both. stomach couldn't handle it and neither could wallet!

one of the big disappointments was not knowing how cool the Lagunitus event was. sure, it was a drive. and it wasn't inexpensive. but damn, it looked like one really good time. that's why it's a good idea to pay attention to what's on the list now because hindsight won't help you.

as for the Barely Wine fest... there are many ways to enjoy that. one of them is to go with a posse. that way you can try all the beers using the power of your people instead of trying to do it by yourself. I'm also a fan of going a day later because lots of those beers are still on tap. be sure to get there the next day because by Monday it's like there's 4, 19, 31, 48 oh and we just ran out of 69. you can be a beer judge for this event if you have the cred. and there's always hanging out with brewers that happens somewhere.

Believe me, I know.
Every year I kill myself... by the end of Beer Week I'm completely warped and cant imagine wanting another beer!
But I ALWAYS wish I'd made that one extra night... the night I decided to stay in :?

I loved the Barley Wine fest about 7 years ago. I've watched a few of the judging's, and I even have a XXXL Toronado BW Judges Tshirt of my very own

Two years ago it was stupid crowded.
Last year they were throwing up all over the place...
It just getting worse. I'm probably skipping that one.

Yep, I like the days shortly afterwards. I think my days of fifty 4oz pours of BW are over.

The Lagunitas Dinner is "Enjoy a dinner paired with Lagunitas beers from the head brewer's perspective." I'd think pay as you go, ala cart? I've been to those where the menu list suggested pairings for each entree.
