Grapefruit Hefe....YUM

Fri Jul 04, 2008 7:05 pm

I just bought a German Hefe named Schofferhofer which is advertised as a "Grapefruit hefeweizen - mix". It looks pink and pours with a normal head for a pale ale (as opposed to the huge head a hefe gets). Anyway, it smells like grapefruit juice. The taste is definately grape fruit juice but there is no doubt that it's a beer with your typical hefe characteristics. Honestly I think this is the best fruit beer I have ever had. There's lots of foreign language which says "50/50" on the label which would lead me to believe it is a half an half mix of beer and juice. Either way, I definately recommend this and even if you're just going to pour a pint, add some grapefruit juice. I think you'll be in for a treat!!!
Too much of a good thing....is a very good thing!

I ahve had some Schofferhofer before, but not that particular one. In Europe, they make what is called a shandy, half beer, half fruit juice, that must be what you got. I seem to recall them made with lemonade tho.

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head. When I wrote that up I was feeling pretty....charming (6 beers into it) but yeah I suppose it was a shandy. I've had the juice-free version too but don't remember my impression of it. Either way, I thought it was a nice change of pace.

I bought some from a discount supermarket called Lidl here in the UK. It is a really nice drink but only 2.5% alc/v, so similar strength to a shandy.
I was thinking it would be nice to brew some but more like 5% alc.

Does anyone have a recipe?
Cheers,
Mark
