Is a scotch ale the same as a scottish 60 or 80

"Scotch ale" usually refers to a wee heavy or strong scotch ale which is a different style than a Scottish ale. Traditionally Scottish ales were taxed based upon the starting gravity which is where the 60 shilling, 70 shilling, 80 shilling, etc designation came from. The higher the starting gravity the higher the shilling designation of the beer.

the starting gravity is only 1.045 that can not be a we heavy it is a brewers best kit. Before you laug hI am supporting my local brew shop

If it is 1.045 then it is most likely a Scottish Export or 80 Shilling.

Was the kit one from a can? (that's right, cans) If so maybe you used the wrong amount of water.

Either way, I'm sure your beer will turn out fine.
