Rauchbier

I had my first Rauchbier this weekend at Carlyle's (the local brew pub). I liked it so much I'm currently doing some research on the style. Here's some good reading I found and wanted to share it if anyone else is interested in Smoked beers.

Bub, if you get the chance, get over to Carlyle's and try this beer, It's fantastic. I also tried his Quadruple which is very tasty.

Hey, dito here man. I had my first one last week and loved it (Schlenkerla Smokebeer). I've pieced together a few recipes and i'm dying to try them out. Most of what I've read they were listed as "Aquired tastes" or "a beer that should be paired with..." I drank it by itself and loved it.

Rauchbier is possibly the only style of beer that I've consistently not liked. Not sure what it is. I have yet to drink a rauchbier that I thought tasted good. So if you guys have recommendations for "good rauchbier" if such a thing exist, then please pass them along! I'd like to be proved wrong about this style.

I'm with you on this one, Spidey. I, too, have not found a smoked beer I liked. I have tasted award winning homebrew smoked beers and not particularly liked them though I have had some that tasted less bad than others. I have even tried the acclaimed Alaskan Smoked Amber and not liked it. I bought some rauchmalt a year or so ago in anticipation of brewing a smoked beer, but then I started trying some to get a handle on the taste I should be going for. I think I will just give that malt away to someone in our club just to get rid of it.

From talking with different people, I've concluded that smoked beers are either a love it or hate it style. You may not ever find a smoked beer you like.
