Re: Sierra Nevada Tumbler Clone

Hey Hey,

Thanks for posting this recipe, Cranny04. My buddy & I were just draining a couple six packs of Tumbler this weekend. I'm really enjoying the SN Tumbler this Fall & this looks like a recipe clone I'd like to try for my next brew day! However, I'm not brewing AG yet. Would anyone be so generous as to help convert this to a Mash-Extract recipe for those of us without an AG system & also a revised amount of Smoked Malt to keep it more in line with Sierra Nevada's recipe? Many thanks BNA!

This is extract Tumbler I made a little while ago:

6lbs Muntons Plain Light DME
1lb American Crystal 60
8 oz Chocolate Malt
8 oz Smoked Malt

1 oz Northern Brewer - 60 Min
1/2 oz East Kent Goldings - 15 min
1/2 oz Perle - 5 min

4 oz Maltodextrine - 15 Min

Yeast: Safale US-05

4 Week Primary
Force Carbed@ 30 psi for 3 days
purged and set regulator @ 8psi for serving pressure.

Taste is pretty close. Maybe a bit smokier than the original. If I make this again, I may up the chocolate malt and decrease the smoke malt just for a little better flavor.

Thanks Spacegrass! I think I might try your recipe for my next brew day. This is for a 5 Gal batch, right? Maybe I'll go with 12 oz Chocolate & 4 oz Smoked instead.

Yes, this is for a 5 gallon batch.

I would definitely only do 4 oz of the smoked malt. Maybe even up the chocolate malt to 1lb.

I found out the other day that SN's Steve Dresler is my bosses uncle.
Perhaps I can persuade him to get the recipe.
I was talking to him about making the celebration clone and he asked if I wanted him to make a call.
I then told him about the BN and that Steve was on CYBI and shared it already.
Kind of a cool connection, I thought.
Ill see him on Wednesday and Ill mention it to him. :jnj

I actually saw him today. I mentioned it to him and he said he would give him a called. I told him to name-drop Justin and the BN. :drink
