I am looking to find an Oberon clone.

Wed Mar 04, 2009 9:44 am

I have been searching for some time now on a good extract with steeping grains or an all grain recipe(I can convert that to an extract with Brewsmith) for a Bell's Oberon clone. I have come across a number of recipes, but it seems that I cannot find out what the brewer thinks of the recipe after he or she has brewed it.

Anyone know of a tried and true Oberon clone?

Thanks for any help.

I grew up in Michigan and tried fir the longest time to get a grip on a good Oberon clone recipe while I was going to school in Oregon, I emailed friends from high school who are now pro brewers and a few fellow michigander home brewers. It's pretty much just a simple hefe recipe (50% Pils, 50% wheat, with a small amount of some saaz, maybe Tettnang)... You must culture the yeast from Oberon bottles, it's the only way. I could never get the bottles in Oregon so I was never very successful at cloning it, just made hefes... So if you can get a hold of the Oberon yeast from a bottle and are capable of culturing it (you are) then you should just apply that yeast to a good hefe recipe... That being said I've never been able to do it, so what the hell do I know... But I've made similar posts in forums and got the same response that you've been getting (crickets)... good luck breddah! :aaron

Served this one up at the SODZ table during Club Night at NHC 08. It tasted pretty close to Oberon in my opinion. Course, hadnt had one since the summer. What Iremembered though, it was pretty close:

Oberon - All Grain

5 lbs wheat malt
4 lbs pale 2-row malt
12 oz Munich light
8 oz Caravienne
4 oz Torrified wheat

mash at 150° for 60 minutes

1 oz Hersbrucker 3.3% for 60 minutes
1/2 oz Hersbrucker 3.3% for 30 minutes
1/2 oz Saaz pellets for 15 minutes
1/3 oz Saaz pellets for 7 minutes

Wyeast 1010 American Wheat yeast
I'm smelling a lot of IF comming offa this plan!
