Re: Janet's Brown Ale?

Our club is actually having an American Brown internal competition to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, and most of us are brewing Janet's Brown. It will be interesting to see how different brewers/systems affect the final beer. Either way, they'll all be great I'm sure. We'll be sure to raise a glass to Janet.

I brewed Janet's Brown Ale last week, pitched a bunch of 1056 from a previous pale ale and i've been happily watching it ferment (like a volcano) at 67-68F for the last week. Can't wait to carb and taste it! The only problem with this hobby is being patient, and also dealing with 15-20 gallons of beer in my kegs.

I can assist you in dealing with excess liquid removal if you are in need of such help.

The target OG is 1.066 but the JBA is a pretty forgiving recipe. The hopping choices and level matches well with a wide range of finishing gravities. The Imperial version (1.074 OG) uses the exact same hop bill although some of that additional gravity is from sugar. You should be fine but I would consider drinking it fairly young before the hops start to drop out. Most people have no problem doing that. :)

yep, yep, yep, yep

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the mash hopping mentioned in the all-grain version. Do I just dump the pellets into the kettle as I'm sparging and leave them in there through the whole boil? I would think that would add quite a bit more IBU's than what the recipe has stated?

From what I understand, mash hopping means put them in the mash with your grain.
First Wort hopping would be putting them in the kettle after first runnings.

Good point, don't know what I was thinking.

I brewed this last night and while the wort had a good taste to it, I'm really hoping the bitterness gives way to the smoothness as it gets older. I missed the numbers just a bit too, so that might be why it seems more bitter than I expected. Still I'm sure it'll be a great beer.
