What makes a Pils a Pils and not just a Lager?

Why are some lagers called Pilseners and others are just lagers?
Would something like Heineken be considered a Pilsener or just a lager?

Well, Josh, all pilseners are lagers, but not all lagers are pilseners! Gimme a call sometime 503-760-1024, and I'll let you try some of my lagers (some of which are pilseners, some not) and see what you think. Also, maybe we could meander over to the Horse Brass and try some various pilseners and lagers so you see what the big fellers do. Basically, a pilsener is just a hoppy lager, while any bottom fermented beverage could be considered a lager, but not necessarily a pilsener. As always, YMMV, so ttyal, and ilbcnu!

Yup, which is why I selected it, besides being near my part of town What part of Portland do you live in btw (if you don't mind me asking)? I live out in the barren wastelands of SE Portland near Gresham, where good beer is difficult to find We really need a decent brewpub out here that doesn't end in McMenamins Take care, and ilbcnu!
