when to use gelatin

Thu Jan 31, 2013 4:48 pm

I have a 12 gallons of beer in the primary that I would like to dry-hop. I also would like to fine with with some gelatin. My plan is to:

1 - add the gelatin once primary fermentation is done
2 - let it set a few days on the gelatin
3 - rack to secondary carboys
4 - add dry hops
5 - keg

My thinking is that I would rather dry-hop off the primary yeast anyway, so I would add the finnings in the primary. Anyone see any problems with this plan?

for best results with gelatin....crash cool and add it to the keg before carbonating it...then use the set it and forget it method...pour off the first pint and toss it and then you will have crystal clear beer

+1 Stinkfist. This is exactly what I have heard from most everyone on here.
Bottled: fresh hop pale ale
On tap: Moose bile strong ale
In the cellar: Taqu'il's Fat Black Imperial Stout
Lagering:
In the fermenter: Moose drool clone
In the works: Taqu'il's Fat Black Imperial stout

I'd definitely add it to the keg before filling. I fill my kegs at room temp (I keep my place cold - upper 50's, low 60's) using the liquid post to fill from the bottom. It mixes the gelatin into solution very well. I typically check how the carbonation is progressing around day 3 & the gelatin has already done it's thing.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your goal is more hop aroma i would go as planned, fine then dry hop in the keg off of primary yeast. Dry hopping a clear beer will pick up more aroma than a cloudy beer. Yeast strips out the oils and ibus. If you goal is maximum clarity the it would be better to fine after the dry hop, although gelatin isn't the best at pulling out hop haze anyways.
