Juniper Rye Bock - what category?

Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:06 am

As usual, as I do my last minute NHC bottling, I have realized that my beers never fit into BJCP style guidelines. Can anyone help me place the following?

Juniper Rye Bock
5.50 lb Munich Malt I (6.3 SRM) Grain 35.76 %
4.00 lb Munich Malt II (10.8 SRM) Grain 26.01 %
3.00 lb Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain 19.51 %
2.00 lb Rye Malt (4.7 SRM) Grain 13.00 %
0.88 lb Dark Crystal (90.0 SRM) Grain 5.72 %
2.00 oz Hallertauer [3.20 %] (60 min) Hops 20.9 IBU
2.00 oz Juniper Berries (Boil 60.0 min) Misc
2.00 oz Juniper Berries (Mash 0.0 min) Misc
4.00 oz Juniper Berries (Boil 5.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs German Bock Lager (White Labs #WLP833)

OG:1083 FG:1015 ABV 8%
IBU:21 SRM:17

The beer has a clean, medium body. It tastes very dry and has only a hint of sweetness, but has a nice malt character that is not cloying or thick. It is a translucent brown. It is well aged, so the hop and juniper characteristics are just apparent in the background. I'm torn between entering it as a tradional bock (though bjcp says "never any adjuncts") and a dopplebock (though it doesn't seem quite big enough for that). I'm wondering if there's another category where it might fit.

If you can taste the juniper or rye, don't enter it as a traditional bock. Enter it as the beer that it tastes like. In my limited judging experiece, I have never had access to the actual recipe - I've only been able to ask questions about it, if I tasted anything strange.

I have a similar dilemma with Boog's Rye Cream Ale. For the most part it tastes like a cream ale - however it has a spiceyness that puts it out of the category. I had to enter it as a specialty.

Use Category 23, but maybe include the historical info for a Finnish Sahti (since it looks like that's what you brewed).

They need a WTF category. Or a Gross As Hell category. Sorry, I'm sure it tastes fine, it just sounds gross to me! :D Maybe I'm just an :asshat:

Hahaha, I know, I was just being an :asshat: . That would be cool, I want to take the test sometime and would love to take some classes. I'll hit him up.
I actually saw that this is a recipe (at least the name and idea) from Radical Brewing as I was reading it the other day. There's some crazy stuff in that book.

Yep, that recipe was taken from Radical Brewing. I found that the Juniper flavor was overwhelming, so I cellared the bottles for a couple of years. The flavor did mellow, and I now find the beer to be much better.
