AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I broke my kegerator!!

Fri May 31, 2013 3:38 pm

I noticed a bunch of ice building up in the back of my kegerator today so I decided to chip it out. I got concerned that I would break the plastic casing with the hammer I was using so I picked up a small chisel.....BAD IDEA!!! I accidentally punched a small hole in the back of the refrigerator and then heard a hissing sound (I believe this was coolant escaping from the line) and after about a minute or so it stopped. The temp in the refrigerator has been slowly climbing since this happened. I am not sure how to fix or remedy this situation. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :(

The first thing that I would do to fix it is to look on craigslist.
Now sure if there is a "stop leak" for those things. Maybe a new condenser coil or something?
Got a pic for further analysis?

I took a pic with my phone and am currently waiting for it to make it to my computer. It's taking forever, I had hoped to include it with my first post but it's so slow. I hope I will be able to patch the hole and replace the coolant.

The problem isn't the leak. The problem is that moisture immediately leaked into the system. Moisture + coolant = coolant breaking down into hydrochloric & hydrofluoric acid. Definitely not a DIY job, especially if you plan on doing it legally. It would require an EPA certified technician who's got some pretty awesome skills & an hourly rate that would reflect that. Hate to tell you man, but the cheapest fix is indeed Craigslist.

Not sure where you live, but you could still throw that sucker in the basement and use it as a ferm chamber when it gets colder. Just add heat.
Just trying to put a positive spin on it.
Cheers and RIP.
Also- next time, use a hair dryer to melt that damn ice.

You are definitely hosed! Not a do it yourself fix and a small brand new freezer will cost less than a competent repair job.
