22oz Bottles to 12oz

Mon Mar 11, 2013 10:18 am

So - I just noticed that the NHC does not accept 22 oz "bomber style" bottles. I already have my beer that I hoped to enter bottled up in 22oz bottles.

Am I completely screwed here, or can I simply transfer my beer from the larger bottles to some smaller ones? Any other thoughts?

Thanks all.

Transfering to 12 oz bottles is probably your only option. Get the beer and bottles cold. Purge the oxygen out of your 12 oz bottles with Co2. Transfer the beer as gently as possible by siphoning or by pouring if you have to. If the beer has been bottle conditioned you could add a pinch of sugar to restore some carbonation.
Good luck. :jnj

I know that this is an old post but I thought I'd let you know my experience.

I had the same issue with a beer for the second round of the NHC. I thought I would take a chance and try using the following technique: I flushed the bottles with CO2 after sanitizing them as would normally. I then poured the beer very slowly from the 22 to the 12 using a funnel and a piece of tubing. I then capped the beer immediately. The technique worked very well because the beer took a Third Place in Speciality Beer in the 2014 NHC.

There are a few caveats, first of all this was a very highly carbonated bottle condition Brett beer beer. So I had a bit of a cushion in regards to carbonation lose. Secondly I waited to the last minute to rebottled the beer and I sent the beer overnight thru Fed Ex.

I hope that helps, I would only recommend this technique in as a last resort but it works and if you are dead set on entering a comp i would give it a shot.

Very cool! Congrats on the big medal win. The brett also helped pickup some of that oxygen that entered from your bottling transfer as well. Sounds like it does work after all...

Thank you, I agree with you regarding the Brett. I spoke with Nate about this after the ceremony and he said Gordon Strong mentioned doing something similar on an Session.

As a cellarman for the NHC 1st round and other club run comps, even if the rules don't prohibit 22oz bottles, if you submit in that format, you're a fucking asshole. They make more work for the cellar, since they don't fit in boxes easily, and if I had my way, any 22oz bottles would be taken out back and smashed on the pavement.

Well done on the rebottling though... but you'll always wonder... could it have been a gold?
