Dorm fridge kegerator problem

Thu Feb 16, 2006 12:15 am

I'm having trouble coverting a dorm fridge into a kegerator. When I take measurements, it seems that a Corny keg won't fit it the mini-fridges on the market today. Even my big one won't work.

Anyone use a dorm fridge for a kegerator, and if so, what brand?

You mean other than the ubiquitous Sanyo 4900/4910/4912?

That is the gold standard.

I am in the process of building mine right now... but I am using the BYO method. I aquired one of the little cube size dorm fridge (like 1cu ft or so) and am mating it to a home built insulated box. The fridge will cool air and have the taps on the door while the box will hold the beer.
I will give better instructions if asked.

You have to step up and pay for the ones without the freezer section in them. They cost a but more (like $80 more). But for beer, it is worth it!

I just aquired one of the larger dorm fridges (Danby DCL432) for free. It's the same size as the above mentioned Sanyos, but does have the freezer box. Too small for the 5 gallon kegs, but I can fit one of my 3 gallon kegs in there with no modifications. If I replace the the shelf unit molded into the door panel with a flat piece, I can get 2 3 gallon kegs and a 5# CO2 bottle in there.

I am going to give this to my brother so I don't have to keep filling growlers for him.

Yeah, I know this isn't too helpful. 3 gallon kegs will probably cost more that buying the right size fridge in the first place, but hell, the fridge was free and I already had the kegs.

I looked at the fridge route but had the same problem. Anything big enough was costly and started to approach buying one already made... and I was NOT about to do THAT.

I bought a Chest Freezer at Home Depot instead. Magic Chef 7cuft for $149 at the time. Check them and other appliance stores for the best deal. I bought the tap tower and other CO2 accessories at BeverageFactory.com and my LHBS. Got the cheaper temp controller and it works great.

I can fit 4 cornies at a time, OR 2 cornies and a carboy for lagering.

It's a little bigger than a dorm fridge, but much more versatile.
