Stir Plate Vortex With Water

Sat May 31, 2008 10:43 am

I made my stir plate and after some small modifications, it is running smooth, except for the fact I do not get a good vortex like when I checked it out with tap water. I even had the plate on the lowest setting for water and the highest with my starter. I do use O2 with a stone for 10-15 min so do I really need to worry about the vortex?

You don't need to oxenagate your starter when using a stir plate. You only have to keep the yeast in suspension. A vortex strong enough to see a dimple in the the center should be sufficient.

Ok, thanks. I usually let my starter go for about 1 1/2 - 2 days and by 30+ hours there is not dimple, but the yeast is still swirling, so I guess all is good.

I had to play around with the spacing on mine a bit to get the magnet just the right distance from the stir bar.
