Aluminum is perfectly fine and better than SS for heat transfer.
John Palmer noted metallurgist says it's fine, I trust him.
Nuff said.

I used converted kegs but I would use a nice aluminum pot in a heart beat. Like Bub said, it John said it, it might as well be gospel. He's one sharp tack.

I love my huge, thick aluminum pot. It was $50 bucks (well, $65 with a lid) and it does a great job of doing what it should.

I got the ten gallon one a year ago. It was very easy to drill holes in it for a ball valve and thermometer.

do you still need a stepped drill bit to drill into aluminum or can i get it done with a big titanium drill bit?

You don't need a stepped bit if you don't already own one. A hole saw or a hole punch set will do the job. Twist drills can be a bit dangerous. Using big ones lick that have a tendency to catch on thin materials and jerk the drill right out of your hands. I've been hit a couple times doing just that.
