Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:37 pm

I just aquired two helium tanks. I think there 20 lbs. Anyhow should I be able to take these to a welding/gas supplyer and exchange for co2 tanks? I think I can, i will find out monday

Could you "carbonate" with helium or are CO2 and NO2 the only gasses possible?

You only use the helium for "light" beers.

Seriously, you should be able to exchange the tanks straight across at any of the large gas companies such as AirGas, Praxair, and LinWeld. I had a spare CO2 tank that I was able to exchange straight across for an O2 tank.

I wonder if you'd end up sounding like a Munchkin after drinking a couple pints of this? If so, it'd be pretty funny to replace some frat party's keg-o-swill with one that was carbed with helium...... Or do it in a biker bar

I would love to see that in a biker bar! :P

Back to the original question, will helium dissolve into the beer like CO2?

I have 2 tanks. I can get two more. I just might try to do a helium beer. Light ale?? One of the tanks was filled . I will have to give this a try.

Helium isn't nearly as soluble in water as CO2 is. At 0C and ~70 psi CO2 is 200 times more soluble (I spent way too much time finding that number).

It is usually used for reasons that require an insoluble gas (deep sea breathing, or removing other gases from solutions). Sadly, the beer wouldn't have any helium in it unless you were at really really high pressures.

I now consider today at work a productive day.

Ah, sounds like a good experiment for someone with a restrictor plate tap.
