Heatstick Temp Control

Mon Feb 25, 2008 2:36 pm

Anyone know of a quick & dirty why to control the temp on my heatstick? I was using it the warm up my mash and it fried the hell out of it. It works too good! Anyone know of any type of a variable pot that I could put into the circuit and control the heatstick?

I'm using a 1500 w element so so I guess I'd need a pot that could handle that type of amperage.

Any suggestions?

Check for a replacemnet pot for an electric range at the hardware store. That should be able to take the 1500 watt load.

Whenever I use mine in the mash I have to stir constantly. If I let it sit it'll start sizzling in a few seconds. It's a pain so I don't use it too often but it can save the day if I don't hit my temp on the first try.

Honestly, you would be best served to use the heatstick in your HLT and then to pump your mash through a heat exchanger submerged in your HLT to raise the temp gently.

That's what I want to do. Except I'm going to use a 5G cooler instead of my HLT. The only problem is the price of copper now but I got lucky with that one. Scored a 50ft coil of 5/8" OD for $50 including shipping from ebay last month.
