Brew Software

Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:10 am

Can anyone recommend choosing a brewing software. I'm not sure which one to use:

Beer Smith, Pro Mash or another.

Cheers

Both BeerSmith and Promash have evaluation versions that you can d/l and try for 30 days. There is also BeerTools - which does not have an eval. I evaluated BS, and PM - and decided on BeerSmith. The Promash developer has some personal issues and won't be updating it as much. BeerSmith has a slick UI, and you can export to BeerXML - to post or to share. BeerTools looked good from what I can see - but no try-y - no buy-y.

Justin and Shat were talking about getting reps from both products on an upcoming show. Maybe your trial will not be up by then.

I have both promash and beer tools. I think beer tools is nicer for designing recipes. You can make adjustments to your recipe and see how it affects the beer with the style guidlines.

Both of the products are good in my opinion but I like the Graphical user interface on beer tools more.

+1 Beersmith. It also seems a bit more geared toward the homebrewer.

I evaluated Beersmith and Promash and bought Beersmith. Both are good, you can't lose with either.

If you're going to formulate your own recipes, or even tweek a recipe to fit your system you need some sort of program to help you out.

For me, Promash just felt easier to use. Definitely try the free trials with Promash and Beersmith, thats the best way to find out what is best for you.

Has anyone had any technical problems with PM or BS software?

Ive only used promash, a mead friend got it for me for Christmas a couple years ago. I found it really easy to use and you can update the variables yourself, ie AA%, potential sg, etc

This could stir up all sorts of conversation, like it has in the past. Just like saying Ford is better than Chevy or Dodge
