Electric HLT

Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:33 pm

I just built one based on Push's, but I used a rectangular cooler. This coupled with my ranco digital temp controller makes me very happy! I'll post pics when I sober up a bit.
I think I've had about enough beer tonight...Now I need some Whiskey to sober up

I have an electric HLT and I love it. Fill it up, plug it in and walk away.

Awesome, oneal. Definitely post pictures, man. Did you incorporate a stirring mechanism as well?

Push reminded me. Does anyone have pics of an electric HTL stirring mechanism? I'm trying to think of ideas.

I just use a pump and recirc the water. I'm sure you could find inexpensive pumps out there that can handle the temp if you dont have a march-type pump....

Is the common Johnson Digital Temp controller strong enough (i.e. amp draw) to handle the electric heat sticks in the 1500 watt range? I am guessing it probably is since it can handle a freezer.

Is it reasonable to assume that one stick is enough to get 5 to 10 gallons of sparge water up to 170 in the normal 1 hour mash time? Most of my batches seem to hover around 6 or 7 gallons of sparge water on a typical grain bill.

Mine takes 45 minutes to get 6 gallons up to 180° from tap water temperatures. Your time will vary with the starting temperature of your water. My actual time is usually much less as I normally have a few gallons of strike water left to which I add the hot water I used to preheat my mash tun. This will give me a beginning temperature for the sparge water somewhere in the 90-100° range by the time I add the additional water I need.
