new kettle idea

Mon Oct 01, 2007 5:29 pm

for those who use converted kegs for kettles and HLT's, i came across this on ebay and thought it was a nifty idea. NAyone tried this before. I am getting welded fitting put on next week and might go this route. It seems that it would do away with needing a town tube to get the last gallon or so out and leave most of the boiled hops in the kettle.

I wonder why someone hasn't done it this way before?

Now that I think about it, you would probably get some nasty carmelization, if not charing in the tube. Any other thoughts on that?

Boiling wort in the tube will make pumping a challenge while the burner is on. I have a buddy with a center-draw HLT and that is a recurring problem.

Well sure, if you applied a direct flame to the mash tun... but as just a simple infusion mash, I think it's perfect. I have often wondered about putting that out valve at the bottom of the MT to rule out dead space... since they found a way to get around the lip and keep the keg level, I think it's genius!

Yeah, I was thinking boil kettle. In a mash tun it would work just fine I would imagine (other than direct firing).

you may be able to put your burner off center as well so that it wouldnt carmelize the tube. I already have side holes in my brew legs so i have no choice but to build suck up tubes. I use a rectangle cooler for mash tun so no need for it right now.
