Temp Control Frig - Light on, No motor

Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:10 pm

I have a E54 Brewer’s Edge Controler II w/ Digital Display that I have been using for about two months to control a 7 to 8 year old Frigdaire Model FRT21LRGW2 refrigerator. Put a Carboy of Cider in last night, took the temp down to 68 F and went to bed. Woke early this morning to good fermentation, took the temp down to 66 F. An hour later I took it down to 64 F. About an hour later I was leaving for work and checked the controller. The light in the frig was on, but no motor. I guess I may have not set the Differential or Anti-short Cycle Time Delay up correctly on the controller and did something to the frig. I got some advice from my mechanically incline friends at work and was told three possibilities; it’s either the overload protector, compressor relay, or worse the compressor motor. Anyone have thoughts on how to fix this or should I just find another used one for $100?

Thanks for the help,
Sean

Yeah, I did give a lot of detail on this one. I'm Just pissed off since I just threw $100 down in July on the frig and finally got some support from the wife on getting the dam thing. If I have to get another I know she's gonna give me some crap about wasting more money on my silly beer hobby. Just looking for an easy solution.

What happens when you try the fridge WITHOUT the temp controller?

Plug it into the WALL, not the temp controller and see if it works.

According to this:

http://www.appliance-parts-warehouse.com/frigidaire-parts/Frigidaire-Refrigerator-Parts/Frigidaire-Parts-FRT21LRGW2/Frigidaire-Parts-56428.cfm

either compressor model (w/ or w/o starter cap) has an "overload" cutout. If you short-cycled the compressor this could have opened. I'm not sure if it is a one-time device or not.

also, according to this:

http://www.appliance-parts-warehouse.com/frigidaire-parts/Frigidaire-Refrigerator-Parts/Frigidaire-Parts-FRT21LRGW2/Frigidaire-Parts-56427.cfm

your model has a defroster on a timer. While the defroster is energized, the compressor cannot come on.

Do you have AC across the RED and WHITE wires going to the compressor? If you DO, the overload cutout is open or the compressor motor is shot. If you DON'T, you have to look at that defroster relay.

BE CAREFUL. If you aren't comfortable making these measurements yourself, find an electrician buddy and trade him some beer.

Code,

Thanks for the good info.
I'm willing to work on it myself, it's already not working. I can't do too much more damage. Also to answer your question, I tried it without the controller with the same results.

Code,

Thanks! I just tried it again without the controller, waited 5 minutes, and the motor is running now. Hope this info can help someone else
