Getting my Wort from my kettle to Carboy...with a twist

Wed Jan 10, 2007 5:28 pm

All right, here is my problem. I brew either outside on my patio or in my garage. Every time I drain my kettle into my carboy, hoist it up and carry it through my house, down the stairs and in my fermentation chamber (closet in the basement) I say to my self "There has to be an easier way!"

I see breweries move wort from one place to another using hoses and pumps , can I do that too? I don't have any other place to put my carboys but down in the basement.

The place in the basement where I ferment is right below where I brew. What I am thinking is to put in some sort of a permanent pipe through the wall in the garage. Put it some place between the outside and downstairs with some quick disconnects, get some 1/2 hose and use a pump to get the wort from the kettle down into the basement to the carboy. Does this seem possible or really dumb?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

Why not... how are you going to sanitize?

Sounds like a good idea. Figure out a way to use keg QDs and pump PBW and Star San through the line then run your wort in. You might not even need the pump. I would get the lines in place and try it with water and no pump. Might save you buying a pump anyway.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

That sounds like it would be a cool idea. I have to go with Lufa, gravity never cuts off. How about just running a pipe that you could slide a tube down? That way you could just remove the tube and clean it whenever. Also no worries of bugs or kids doing anything to the set-up.

If you use QDs or valves on each end of the pipe, you could leave it filled with StarSan between brews to keep it bug free.

Now that's an idea. I'd been thinking about the same type of setup and this hose idea makes it definitely do-able. Just make sure to use threaded pipes so you can cap them off and keep the critters out of your basement.

If you sell your house you might have a buyer right here. Permanent brew-plumbing increases the value ten fold in my book! :D

See, now I thought you would think I was retarded or something for thinking about doing this... thanks for all the ideas. Not sure what way to go but I like simple. So, what ever I decide for the pipe-through-the-house thingie I'll most likely try gravity first.

Thanks again,
