stainless braids

OK! I decided to go the stainless braid route over my entirely sucky copper manifold. I cut both ends off. Is that inner hose supposed to slide right out? I had to work that SOB out of there like a fool. The braid got a bit contorted but I figure I'll be fine after a bit of vorlauf. Any insight? I also decided to use the hot water braid since it is about 2x larger in diameter than the other braids I saw. I also figured that it would increase my run off speed. My manifold was slowed down just enough to give me a 1.5 hour fly sparge. Draining for batch sparge took me 1 hour. With the stainless dealio, I'm draining in about 10 minutes or less. Is this good? What up?

Cut the ends of the braid and then soak it in hot soapy water. Should slide right out. (Uh Oh).

Draining in about 10min sounds about right.

I also use the braid. It normally takes 5 - 10 minutes to drain depending on how sticky the mash is. Sounds like you have solved your problem.

Getting the braid off is a PITA. I dropped mine into some water I had heated to boiling and let it soak for about 5 minutes. I put on some gloves and worked it off like one of those chinese finger things. You have probably already figured out the reason for the gloves. Those wire ends are sharp!

The braid is kind of like a large chinese finger trap. If you try to pull the braid in one direction and the inner hose in the other direction, it'll grab and won't want to come off. Instead, push the braid off from the end where the tube is being extracted. It will compress the braid making it looser on the tube and it should come right off. At least, mine came off really easily that way.

I also used the finger-lock method

I used the finger lock method adn ended up with nicely blistered fingers. However, that was the only way that stuff wanted to come off. It does rinse a bit slower than just a manifold though. Smaller holes for things to go through.

For future reference, whenever you cut the SS Braid, put tape around the spot you are going to cut and saw right through the tape, It holds it together better and you dont have all those sharp ends hanging out there
