Heating element below false bottom

Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:02 pm

I've been thinking about buying a new Stout mash tun and putting a blichman boil coil under the false bottom. Has anyone seen a system like this, or know why it wouldn't work? I'm trying to simplify my brew system a little

I'd have to space the false bottom up, and loose some capacity, but that should be easy to account for.

Were you thinking that you would have a pump circulating the wort all the time? If not, it seems like you would have a really hard time having a consistent mash temperature across the mash.

That said, I have a boil coil that resides in my boil kettle and I reciculate my wort from the kettle to the tun and back to the kettle (like a blichmann BrewEasy system....kinda) and that seems to work very well for temperature control. If you circulate the mash tun then it seems like you would have roughly the same thing.

a word of caution-
a bit of grain always escapes below most false bottoms. When it invariably ends up stuck to the heating element, it will scorch and you'll tend to get a touch of ash/burnt/smoke in your beers.

+1. And one of the reasons I hate my RIMS & want to go back to HERMS asap.

I just ditched my RIMS for a stout tank HERMS. The way they their false bottom works I don't think you will be able to put an element underneath of it.

The only reason I gave it up was because I upgraded from a 10g system to a 1bbl system. The old coil just couldn't handle the larger MLT. Too many other things have had priority, but eventually... I always had good luck with the coil in the HLT, but the more I think about it, I kind of like the idea of adding a separate vessel for it.
