Water Filter

Tue Aug 07, 2012 6:20 pm

I am looking to buy a water filter for my brewing. I found this http://www.menards.com/main/outdoor/cam ... c-7834.htm

Just wondering if anybody had experience with using this or suggestions for a better filter. Thanks in advance.

No experience with that particular filter, but the description doesn't sound great right off.
It is described as a fiber filter which is OK for sediment, but should be charcoal or activated charcoal to do what you want for brewing.
Keep an eye out for an activated charcoal filter.
I'm sick of chasing my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're going and hook up with them later.

According to the description this is a 100u fiber filter. As such it will not remove anything smaller than 100u and, consequently is only suitable for removing coarse sediment. Serious particulate filters start at 5u and 5u followed by 1u is not atypical in RO systems.

This filter will not remove chlorine or bad tastes and odors. All it will remove is particles bigger than 100u.

As to a better filter: what is it you are trying to remove?

I have been using a GE drinking water filter, if I recall it goes down to 5u that's off the cuff though. It cost me around $80-90 bucks. They use Chloramine here so I toss a tab in the HLT before firing it up.
Not overly pleased with the water here, so seriously considering RO in the future and buuilding waterto suit.

I am looking to filter out chlorine, bad taste and odors. My goal is to be able to use my city water profile just polished up without any of the negatives that might come along with it (chlorine etc...). Correct me if I am wrong but I think Foomench's suggested filter is probably the way to go?

I don't know that any filter will remove all of the chlorine, or chloramine, save maybe an RO, still probably best treat for those. I would feel pretty comfortable using most anything from Morebeer. No personal experience with it though.
